Does user interface and experience affect SEO

by Tushar Jadhav

Content is the heart of every marketing strategy and activity. Everything in Online marketing revolves around content.

Writing great content will undoubtedly take you a long way but if you don’t give an attractive touch to your content you will face high bounce rate.

As shown in the figure below, the same content is written in two different ways. One has all the aesthetics and icons in place whereas the later one is just simple text without any graphics.

Users generally, don’t interact with this kind of dull pages and immediately bounce off.

To overcome this, UI and UX come into the scenario.

User interface is the way through which a user interacts with an application or a website via screens, pages, and visual elements. Whereas, user experience is how the user feels after interacting with your website.

The famous analogy to understand UI/UX is to picture a restaurant, whatever you see the tables, chairs, plates, glasses, and utensils is UI. Whereas, UX is everything from the food, service, background music, to the parking lights and so on.

SEO, on the other hand, is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic.

Both UX/UI and SEO have the same objective.

Marketers and designers come up with great strategies and graphics so that the users spend more time on their website, there is a low bounce rate, more social shares, and high customer retention.

Here are some reasons for why you should integrate UI/UX with SEO

1. Power of Teamwork

Where SEO drives users to the website, UI/UX makes sure to create an everlasting first impression. SEO and UI/UX are more like partners that work together towards the same objective.

As UI/UX uses wireframes, interactions, and layouts to give out an experience that is user-centric, the SEO experts use search results measured from users to report the same experience.

The keyword data is like a precious asset for the SEO experts to get insight into the user journey and his searching behavior. This data, which is gathered directly from the user’s buying cycle UX designers know exactly what kind of interface and interactions the user is looking for & designs the pages accordingly.

2. Say ‘hello’ to an ideal website

An amazing website with great aesthetics and not so good content which is not SEO friendly and vice versa will ultimately fall in the category of bad website.

Factors like Headings, Image tags, Page copies, Page speed and mobile friendliness influence both SEO and UI/UX.

  • Headings

In SEO the headings appear as a clickable title in the SERPs and also shows up on social networks and in browsers. Whilst, in UX, headings improve the page readability and help structure the content on the page, making it easier for users to scan the page and understand the content.

  • Image tags

The image tags help Google bots understand what a picture is all about. Google not only crawls your web texts but also crawls your image filenames & alt text which helps it to show your image when a user searches for information related to your descriptive keyword.

Image tags improve usability by providing information when images don’t load, ensuring the user receives a similar experience with an image or without the image. Hence, resulting in a good user experience.

  • Page copies

In SEO, the content page copies are ideally not more than 800 words. You can use keywords in the content so that the website ranks higher in the Search Engine.

Long-form content, as long as it’s relevant, will improve the user experience.

  • Page speed

No one wants to wait more than 2 seconds for a page to load . Even Google doesn’t wait longer than 2 seconds, because of which the page load time became an SEO-metric.

The quicker the page loads, the better the user experience you will achieve. A speedy site also means it’s developed well and isn’t too bulky.

  • Mobile friendliness

With Google’s recent switch to a mobile-first index, it is very important to analyze how a site works on mobile rather than desktop.

While this makes sense for SEO, it is also easy to see that if your site isn’t optimized for mobile devices then it would provide a poor user experience.

3. Call-to-actions

A CTA is an image or line of text that prompts your visitors, leads, and customers to take action on the website.

Placing a customized CTA with contrasting color & good aesthetics at the right spot is an essential part of UX design. It was observed that placing the CTA at the right place helped to increase the conversion rate by 70%.

Conclusion-

Although SEO is very important, take into consideration the user experience of your website too. The user experience is one of the most important factors of a successful site and will affect your SEO efforts as well.
